Criteria for the identification of Bacillus anthracis.

چکیده
The identification of Bacillus anthracis involves its differentiation from other aerobic sporeformers, particularly Bacillus cereus. Smith et al. (1952), in a study of aerobic sporeforming bacteria, concluded that B. anthracis is a pathogenic variety of B. cereus. They also stated that strains of B. anthracis which had lost their virulence could not be differentiated from B. cereus. This apparent relationship between B. anthracis and B. cereus was supported by Brown et al. (1958). Burdon (1956) listed characteristics for the identification of pathogenic strains of B. anthracis, but indicated that attenuated and avirulent strains presented properties closely approaching those of B. cereus. The report which follows presents data showing that the combination of a few simple tests serves to identify both virulent and avirulent strains of B. anthracis and in addition differentiates them from B. cereus, Bacillus cereus var. mycoides, Bacillus thuringiensis, and Bacillus subtilis. Data will be presented to show that pathogenic strains of B. anthracis which lose their pathogenicity remain B. anthracis and can be differentiated from B. cereus and the other sporeformers tested. Such a differentiation is of taxonomic and medical importance.

In-vitro Evaluation of the Antibacterial and Cytotoxicity Activity of the PAD4 Antigen of Bacillus anthracis as a vaccine candidate
Introduction: Infectious diseases are one of the main causes of death worldwide. This has driven scientists to invest in extraction and identification of antimicrobial agents from natural toxins and presentation of novel antibiotics and vaccines. The aim of the current study is to investigate the antibacterial and cytotoxicity effects of the protective antigen domain 4 (PAD4) from Bacillus anth...
متن کاملEvaluation the Efficacy of Anthrax Vaccine against Challenge with a Highly Virulent Strain of Bacillus anthracis Isolated from Soil in Sheep, Goats and Guinea Pigs in Iran
Protection of animals immunized against Bacillus anthracis is usually demonstrated by challenging with an appropriate dose of a strain of Bacillus anthracis that is lethal to unvaccinated animals inoculated at the same time. In this study the protective efficacy in anthrax vaccine (34F2 sterne strain spore) was evaluated in sheep, goats and guinea pigs challenged with subcutaneous inoculation...
متن کاملDetermination of anthrax foci through isolation of Bacillus anthracis form soil samples of different regions of Iran
To isolate and detect anthrax spores form soil in different regions of Iran in order to find the anthrax foci‚ a total of 668 environmental specimens were collected during 2003-2004. Bacterial endospores were extracted from soil specimens via flotation in distilled water, incubation at room temperature, filtration, heat shock and culture on blood agar and selective PLET media. Bacillus anthraci...
متن کاملTwo Proteins from Snake Venom have Potent Antibacterial Effects against Bacillus anthracis and Streptococcus pneumoniae
Background: Antibacterial proteins are widely expressed in snake venoms. Previously, we have isolated two immunodominant proteins with molecular weights of 14 and 65kD from the snake venom of Naja naja oxiana (N. oxiana). It was demonstrated that they had potent inhibitory effects against gram-positive bacteria, S. aureus and B. subtilis but were less effective against gram-negative bacteria, s...
متن کاملUseful criteria for the identification of Bacillus anthracis and related species.
The methods suggested for the identification of species of the genus Bacillus in the invaluable monographs of Smith et al. (1946, 1952) have been applied to a collection of named cultures, and also have been utilized for the classification of approximately 400 strains of these organisms isolated from samples of blood, spinal fluid, surgical tissue, and other human and animal sources, as well as...
